Key Data Set Information
Location BR
Geographical representativeness description The data is based on a Charcoal Production Unit (CPU) located at the site of the Laboratory of Wood Panels and Energy (LAPEM) of the Federal University of Viçosa in Minas Gerais. The dataset represents the specific situation of the region, focusing on the main technologies and the specific characteristics of the region. This dataset is considered innovative and applicable in UPC with carbonization gas firing system in circular masonry kilns and is under development.
Reference year 2020

Classification

  • ILCD: IC2V2 EN
General comment on data set An innovative charcoal production process that consists in conducting the heat generated by burning the wood carbonization gases from one of the kilns of the kiln-furnace system to dry wood stored in another kiln of the system. After the end of the wood drying phase of this kiln, carbonization begins and the gases are conducted to the furnace until the process is able to supply heat to the next kiln. The reduction of the humidity of the wood inside the kiln before the start of the ignition of the load, unlike how it is done in the conventional process, increases the gravimetric yield in charcoal, besides the possibility of reducing the time of stocking the wood in the field (SIQUEIRA, 2021). This process is under guard for patent registration by the UFV.

Time representativeness
Data set valid until 2030
Time representativeness description The data on charcoal production are based on on-site collection in a production unit in the year 2020, but it is expected that this technology will be in use for at least 10 years. All calculations were made in 2020-2021. Other processes such as forest wood and polypropylene come from the EcoInvent v3.5 database. These specific flows are not available in the ILCD database, so it is suggested to use them to ensure completeness of the environmentally relevant material/energy flows.
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Artificial drying of wood in masonry circular kilns, using the heat generated by burning the carbonization gases of the wood from planted forests of the species Eucalyptus spp.
