General comment This dataset represents the production of 2500 kg cotton bolls, resulting in 1000 kg of cotton fibers and 1500 kg of cotton seed, based on the relation 40:60 between fiber and seed (both fresh matter) (de Brito et al. 2014, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2014000900003). The dataset represents the production 2500 kg cotton bolls after 180 days cultivation period. Data represent harvests of cotton bolls, as the second crop in a crop rotation with soy (60 days cultivation period) and corn+brachiaria (90 days cultivation period) in 2011-2012 in Center/Eastern Brazil (Cerrado bioma). Production per ha = 3513kg (fresh matter). The data set covers all relevant process steps / technologies over the supply chain of the represented gate to gate inventory with a good overall data quality. The mass-balance is closed to 80%. The data set does not include data on irrigation, as more than 90% of the cotton in this area is produced without irrigation.
The inventory is mainly based on direct contact with producers of conventional cotton in combination with expert comments (Nelson Sussano, Embrapa Algodão 2014). Exchange properties used to characterize cotton fibre and seed were based on data in mother dataset (Ecoinvent cotton production (GLO)), except for price, which was based on CONAB - Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (www.conab.gov.br/ <http://www.conab.gov.br/>), as average from January 2011 to January 2015. The overall production of cotton bolls in Brasil reached 5058763 tons in 2011/12, planted on a total of around 1400000. Production in the Cerrado region, which this dataset represents, answers for 90% of the national production.
Calculation of emissions of CO2 derived from direct land use changes were based on he method described by Maciel et al., (2015), using the same period for carbon reservoir equilibrium reaching as suggested by IPCC (20 years).
Emissions to soil from the following pesticides were not included in the dataset: Permit (Diethyl phenol) 0.071kg; Chlorantraniliprole, 0.02kg; Lufenuron, 0.37kg; Carbosulfan, 0.2kg; Etofenprocy, 0.05kg, Dinetrogen monoxide, 0.118kg.
The dataset does not include overhead/administrative processes, or further refining of the crop. thus no use of electricity was included in the dataset.
